The first book of the Spooky Stories series. Here, Spooky begins his journey to restore peace to Lugubrious as the Magical Sphere, which gives all ghosts their powers, has been shattered by a mysterious force. It is not known whether dragons truly grazed across the Hearthlands before the dwarves first sailed from the Sea of Saga; a tale passed down through their generations. What is known, however, is that dwarves and great beasts have long rivaled one another. The Dwarven walls of Orebor have withstand generations of dragon fire, going back as far as the Great Purge, when the dwarves brutally slaughtered many of the mighty creatures, of which dwelled in the caverns under Orenok Mountain; where afterwards the Kingdom of Orebor was constructed. The dwarves viewed the beasts as savage monsters, whose hunger was never fulfilled with ravaging of dwarfish blood.

The lovely damselfly, Princess Persephone, has been betrothed against her wishes to the elusive and awkward Prince Thaddeus. Although Thaddeus is extremely wealthy, he is also a mole cricket, and Persephone is loath to become his underground bride. She escapes, leaving behind a sheltered existence within the palace walls to join a travelling band of tiny actors who call themselves the Nasty Gnats. As she travels the surrounding country, she must constantly keep one step ahead of her father and his vast army of terrifying assassin bugs.

A middle-aged comic book artist loses consciousness after suffering a serious accident and wakes up, not only without injuries, but with limited super powers. His initial reaction is to hide the new abilities. While on a bicycle ride, he has to use his powers to save a woman and two children. The act is recorded by a bystander and appears on TV, when an announcer gives him the name Pedalman. This leads to a series of adventures involving aliens and an unusual alliance.

In the human capital of Azatan the Assembly doesn't have time to take care of the lowlife.
