BEFORE WE WERE MAGIC presents poems that both appreciate and challenge the #BlackGirlMagic movement. These vulnerable, yet heartfelt poems address the overlap of gender, race, sexuality, mental health, family, politics, religion, and more. In a time where stories, images, and attributes of Black women are being celebrated as well as exploited; Before We Were Magic offers insight while also acknowledging the path that many Black girls had to travel prior to being considered magic by the masses.

A collection of poems detailing heartbreak in the most visceral way possible.

Narrative Medicine is the practice of trying to bring healing to those stories that shape so much of our understanding, behavior, and relationships. But what that healing looks like can be so different for each person and each story. These are just some examples of my own efforts in this work for myself that will hopefully inspire others to do this work as well.

These poems are primarily elegies, which hopefully leave one with a feeling of solace and spiritual transcendence as well.

"The Weathering of Strawberry Ben" is a journey of bereavement from demonic dependencies to choking desperation and from helpless sadness to despairing soul-thievery. The story also expresses one's abrupt awakening to a seemingly strange new life of unconditional love and radical forgiveness. Paradoxical circumstances leave one, unashamedly, wanting more. Would Strawberry Ben kill himself?

The stories of life's surroundings are often untold. This is a collection of poems or "tidbits" about a Mother or my Momma who is greatly missed. Struggles with losing a loved one can be hard but sharing them can help ease the pain.

As we all move forward with time. We lose loved ones and gain new family as well. With all the RIP and DIP (Dancing in Paradise) we can face there is laughter and sorrow. The memories of those who have left leave an empty spot that sometimes need to be filled. Please enjoy these tidbits to celebrate the loss, love, happiness and sorrow that we face daily.
