Book Synopsis
Pawns in the Sugarcane Book II is the thrilling sequel to Pawns in the Sugarcane. It’s a fictitious story set in 1898 Cuba, just at the outset of the Spanish American War. This little written about chapter in American history plays as the perfect backdrop for this tale of international intrigue. The story followed the life of Luke Sheehan, a United States cavalry officer who finds himself placed in a precarious position near the closing days of his commission. Pawns in the Sugarcane leaves off with Captain Sheehan languishing in a Bermuda Prison, where he is being questioned by Chief Inspector Yardley of Her Majesties Bermuda Constabulary in regard to the murder of a Spanish officer and his mistress in Bermuda. Captain Sheehan must make a daring escape with the help of the United States Secret Service. Captain Sheehan returns to Washington where he s dispatched back to Cuba because of his previous association with the Cuba Libre. Captain, now Major Luke Sheehan along with a mixed force of Cuba Libre and American soldiers must fight side by side during the opening days of the Spanish American War to secure several vital railroad junctions, preventing the Spanish Army from reinforcing Santiago De Cuba. Although the names are fictions, the towns, areas and objectives are real to 1898 Cuba. This story is attempting to tell history in a more easily palatable framework for persons with no or little interest or knowledge of the Spanish American War. Our main character, Major Luke Sheehan, will traverse the actual locations that existed and deal with the actual conditions and types of persons that a more accurate accounting of historical events would provide. The story is presented in the first person, affording the reader a first person account of the conditions, weapons, and relationships that a contemporary person would have dealt with in 1898. So sit back and enjoy the second half of this adventure, you’re gonna love it.
