Since 1861, a bloody, grueling Civil War had raged in the United States. Thousands upon thousands of soldiers (on both sides) had been killed. Citizens & soldiers grew weary of the conflict. Then, on April 9th, 1865, the War officially ended when the Confederacy surrendered to the North in Virginia.
