A McDonnel Family History This is a history of the ancestors and relatives of my mother’s family. Margaret Ann (McDonnel) Coleman was the fifth surviving daughter of Lucius Ellsworth “Elzie” McDonnel from Mercer County, Ohio and Anna Mae “Annie” (Newlin) McDonnel from Orange County, Indiana. Most of this book is the McDonnel chapter from "McDonnel-Hamilton Newlin-Moore A Family History". I edited the “Introduction” and “Preface” to reflect the narrower focus of the book. I hope you enjoy this collection of stories and photographs of our ancestors and relatives.

These books were written by my maternal grandmother, Anna Mae “Annie” (Newlin) McDonnel. Grandma lived a long life; she was born in 1890 in a log house without electricity or plumbing, and she was 92 years old when she died in 1982 at the beginning of the age of personal computers. Annie has given us a window into the past, and we can look through it any time we want just by reading her words. As you read her books, her life will unfold before you. I invite you to sit back on the couch, with a glass of milk and a plate of warm cookies, and enjoy Grandma’s stories. If you listen hard enough, you may hear a faint echo of her voice.

McDonnel-Hamilton Newlin-Moore A Family History This is a history of the ancestors and relatives of my mother’s family. Margaret Ann (McDonnel) Coleman was the fifth surviving daughter of Lucius Ellsworth “Elzie” McDonnel from Mercer County, Ohio and Anna Mae “Annie” (Newlin) McDonnel from Orange County, Indiana. The Hamilton name in the title is Elzie’s mother, Ida Melvina (Hamilton) McDonnel. The Moore name is Annie’s mother, Permelia Adeline (Moore) Newlin. A book about the complete history of our McDonnel, Hamilton, Newlin, and Moore Families is well beyond my knowledge and capabilities, so I have limited this book to our earliest documented ancestors and some of their descendants. ...

Private Joel Newlin - Company D - 66th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Joel Newlin was my great-grandfather. He was a Private in Company D, 66th Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. A letter he wrote from a Union Army camp in 1862 is the only writing we have about his Civil War experience in his own words. I have been searching for his family history for over 20 years, and I found letters, a diary, and a memoir written by other members of the 66th Indiana Infantry that tell us what was going on in his regiment, and I also found letters, diaries, and books written by other people involved in those events. By weaving these firsthand accounts together we can construct a plausible story of his lif ...
