My parish has been trying to find a solution to keeping teenagers engaged with the church as active participants. Never before have I considered approaching this problem from the side of creating teen leaders. This book is an invaluable asset to my congregation and to my youth minister. Since we have started using this training system, we have seen our youth program grow from 12 teenagers to over 50 teenagers showing up regularly. Anyone interested in teen - parent relationships definitely needs to read this book.

The first time I read through this book, there were some very difficult theories about creating teen leaders for me to be open to. However, I tried using this training system with my youth group to create a leadership team and was amazed with the results. The teenagers I have used this training system with were the more "difficult" ones in my youth group. You know the type if you are in youth ministry as I am, but in case you are not - these are the kids that never get involved or show up for anything that has to do with church. After using the Adventure Catholic leadership training system specifically designed to be used with teenagers called COPEC, these same teens are now very involved and shop up for just about everything having to do with church. Not only that, but they are actually leading their friends to church as well. This was way more than I expected from a book. Thank you to these authors for creating such a powerful and effective tool for parents and youth ministers.

After reading this book, I tried implementing this training system in my own home to help teach my teenage sons how to become better leaders and to be more engaged with the church. I have to say the most difficult part of this was not for my sons...it was for me! Staying out of their way while they approached obstacles I felt they would fail with, was harder for me than I thought it was going to be. My sons did fail on a few challenges, but I kept with the training system and kept encouraging them to try and not be afraid to fail, just like the books says to do, and now I can really see a HUGE difference - not only with my teenage sons and how they are very capable, but also with myself and how my faith has also grown. Excellent book - a must read!

What a great book! I was not only surprised that this leadership training method worked for me, but that my teenage daughter and son read through the book and AGREED that they liked to be challenged! They loved the idea of getting to plan a family picnic, as well as the other challenges in the back portion of the book. I wrote to the authors of this book and found out through my correspondence that they are planning another book soon. I can't wait. If you have teenagers at home, deal with them through youth ministry, or know someone who does, this book is for you!
