Book Synopsis
Susan Parrino Hester attended 11 schools by the time she was in ninth grade, and as the perennial "new girl," felt out of place and anxious. As an adult going through ovarian cancer surgery and treatment, Susan's anxiety led to depression — she felt as though she was in a black hole. On the brink of her second cancer recurrence, convinced she wouldn't live long, Susan began writing the family story for her daughter, Katie. In pulling on her childhood memories, Susan found parallels between her childhood traumas and her cancer journey. The memoir courageously weaves together periods in the author's early and later life, as well as her struggles to find stability and healing.
