Book Synopsis
Beatrice Mowery Ermisch (1917-2014) has written a down-to-earth, first-hand account of growing up on a share-cropper farm in Mifflin Township in northeastern Pennsylvania from 1917 to 1940, with her teen years being during the depression era. She reminisces about attending a one-room school, her father's various ways of making a living, holiday celebrations, stories of family members, milking the cows, watching the bull, family illnesses, bathing and laundry, housework, clothing, tragedies, neighbors, music, church and community, and mystery and legend. She sums up her experiences: “We had many hard times as we were growing up...but most of all, I like to remember a close-knit family, doing battle for each other when necessary and sacrificing for the one in need.” Restored photographs from her family album enhance her accounts of an earlier life in Mifflin Township in this second printing of her updated and revised book.
