Book Synopsis
Judo, like any serious subject of study, has an unique underlying philosophy. Because judo is a complete body of knowledge, it can be learned and taught. While many people think of judo as an extremely physical activity, and it is, an expert in this martial art realizes that the physical phenomena of judo is simply the logical result of rigorous systematic thought. This book explores the driving philosophy behind judo.

Excited to add this to my collection. It is not a technical manual ( meaning it doesn’t provide step by step instruction for techniques) but does offer many insights on fundamentals of striking, takedowns, and grappling.
The book is very much a look into the philosophy of Monty L. Collier and his family, who works to preserve a more combative style, far removed at times from the sportive mindset. I was surprised to find that so much of the book is filtered through a Judeo-Christian analysis. I follow their technical innovations and choreography, but was unaware of the importance their religious practice and how it intertwines into their training.
While not uncommon in the martial arts community, it is one of the few books I have read in English that follows this approach. Hard Fought Lessons by Matt D’Aquino is perhaps the closest comparison I can make, other than The Bible and Bushidio by Master Dárcio Lira which was of course printed in Portuguese.
Traditional approaches to martial arts can certainly be polarizing on their own, and when spirituality is added to the practice it can be a bridge too far for many.
My three main teachers for the past almost twenty years have been very spiritual and enlightened individuals. While I have been more of a middle path type of person, I have always been thankful for guidance received from those who seek to train the the body and mind.
So while this book will speak to a select group of martial artists with its more esoteric examination of judo, I certainly recommend it to any who enjoy martial philosophy. It is perhaps less digestible than The Art of Peace, but a very fulfilling read to open minded practitioners.
