There have been hundreds of books and diaries written on the horrors of the second World War, but that wasn’t his purpose for keeping this diary. As he put it, Jack Pollock's diary was intended for the interest of his readers. There was no attempt made to reveal military secrets, or to show the blood and guts of the battlefield. He was just a small-town Hoosier boy who was given the opportunity to experience parts of the world in a way he never would have in the normal course of things. Jack Pollock’s light and detailed commentary focuses on the 1,168 days he spent as a soldier from his training at the newly opened Camp Atterbury, his journey to north Africa, and on to the slopes of Mount Vesuvius. Everywhere he went he noted the trains that he saw and rode on, and the enjoyment he got from playing the piano.. Includes links to hear Jack playing some of the music he loved.
