I just wanted to introduce myself. Currently, I am a published author. This was my dream when I was a child, so I like to really encourage people to pursue their dreams.

I write self-help books and was lucky enough to find brighertomorrow.net as my domain name. It is a special story.

My books are Addiction to Love and The Art of Changing. While I got lucky with my first books (well it was really God's grace) and found a full-service publisher, the rejection letters have been piling up lately and I am so happy to have found The Bookpatch. I really love to write and share my writings.

I hope to meet people on this forum. Everybody take care and keep pursuing your dreams.
I'm new here, and delighted to find TheBookPatch. I wholeheartedly agree with Victor on a number of issues. In particular, selling on Amazon is not the panacea for the ills of the publishing world. Their focus is on getting market share, and selling your books for next to nothing. They also get a big share by claiming that if you give your book away for a period, it will put your name out there, and create a readership. What the free book philosophy has done, however, is drive readers who want free books to Amazon, and your $0.99 book hasn't a snowball's chance of selling.

The one thruth in all of this is that you must sell yourself. You are the brand, the book is your product. Make your brand well-known out there in reader-land. Use the media at your disposal. FB, Twitter, Blogs, websites, and whatever unique and secret ways you have at your disposal.

An ISBN is a serial number like a license plate on a car, it will help someone identify a book if they are looking for it.
Your task is to make them look.
As for Amazon, we do not tell anyone not to sell their books on Amazon, but remember that they want you to send them books so they have them in stock. They take up to 55% of the cover price and you pay for the printing and shipping to them. Registering your book with Amazon and sending them a copy will not sell books. They have several million books on their list and your job again is to get people to your book.
That is why we created TheBookPatch. If you are going to get people to read your book, might as well retain as much of the money as you can.
The steps to a great book and success in the market (take it from a #1 New York Times bestselling author) is a well structures story, a good edit and exposure.
Send copies to your local media try an independent book store and author events. Tell friends and push it on face book and tweeter. Be active; build a website with a link to your book in our book store. Promotion is hard work and shamelessly flogging a book is what a good author does.
As a result of this dialog I have decided to start a blog on this subject in the coming days, look for it on TheBookPatch.com.
Victor Ostrovsky
TheBookPatch team
sm85 wrote:

I can offer a couple of "must do" tips.

1) Get an ISBN assigned. My father wrote a poetry book before he passed 7 years ago and the cheapest he could get it published for was $15,000.00. I will now be able to publish my dads book along with some family genealogy books I would like to hand out at our next family reunion. This has been easier than I ever thought possible.. How do they receive the money for printing costs? Do I mail it to them?
2. How does the person receiving the book, receive the book? Does the person buying the book receive it in the mail?
3. How do I get the extra money (what's left after printing costs are taken out)? Is it mailed to me or does the site need my bank info or do I need a credit card?

I'm sorry if this post makes no sense but I'm so confused and I don't want to write my book on here and be forced to order it too or have to pay for anything when it's said everywhere that this site is free.

Sincerely,
A very confused newbie.

edited by vostrovsky on 5/21/2012
edited by vostrovsky on 5/21/2012
