If I may add my two cents...

I have had reasonable success buying books from here and other low cost print-on-demand providers and contacting local bookstores with my sales pitch. As a result, I buy my book here and elsewhere for a pittance and sell it to the book store for twice what I paid for it. I make a profit and my book sells. As is, I have had to switch to different service as I am now ordering several hundred at a time.
(No offense or anything but even with express shipping the output from this site is kinda slow.)

The key to being successful as a self-published author is diligent self-promotion.

I make orders, take phone calls and submit excerpts for review on my own.
Granted, I have sold a modest 2400. However, there is no reason why an individual would not be able to do the same with the right amount of dedication and some basic social skills.

The Publisher of Record is the owner of the ISBN.

ISBN is that barcode on the back of books. ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number, or something like that. It's an international registry of titles maintained by Bowker. You can buy individual numbers from them, or a block of ten for a reasonable sum. If you think you may ever publish more than one title buy a block. You can use them for eBooks, CDs, etc., not just books. You get to designate the name of the publishing company, so make up a cool one and declare yourself a publisher. If you own the ISBN, you're good to go.

The ISBN is issued for a book "as is" so if you alter anything beyond simple typo type errors, you are supposed to declare a new edition and use a new number. That means that technically, if you snag an eBook number from Lulu, you would be in violation of Bowker's rules by using it for a print volume anywhere.

If you have any hopes that your book will be in libraries, you need an ISBN. Ditto with Amazon and bookstores. If you are publishing only for private and non-commercial distribution, it doesn't matter.

If you want huge numbers of people to order, Amazon is an advantage. I often add an extra book to an order to qualify for free shipping. I can't do that with other sites. The equation is difficult to assess. Do you want more distribution and visibility for your book and yourself, or higher profit per volume?

I agree with vostrovsky.
The best way to get noticed is to promot your book and tell others about it. If you really wanted to, you could make a website so people who heard about your book can find it easier. Or donate a few coppies to your library! I was personally thinking about that.
But what is a ISBN?? I'm a first time soon-to-be user (I haven't printed my book you, still in mid-editing) so I don't have a clue.

I have to disagree with sm85 and not because I am the founder of TheBookPatch.com but because the steps he offers will get you nowhere.
An ISBN wither it’s free or not will not get you into book stores or into the hands of readers. An ISBN is a serial number like a license plate on a car, it will help someone identify a book if they are looking for it.
Your task is to make them look.
As for Amazon, we do not tell anyone not to sell their books on Amazon, but remember that they want you to send them books so they have them in stock. They take up to 55% of the cover price and you pay for the printing and shipping to them. Registering your book with Amazon and sending them a copy will not sell books. They have several million books on their list and your job again is to get people to your book.
That is why we created TheBookPatch. If you are going to get people to read your book, might as well retain as much of the money as you can.
The steps to a great book and success in the market (take it from a #1 New York Times bestselling author) is a well structures story, a good edit and exposure.
Send copies to your local media try an independent book store and author events. Tell friends and push it on face book and tweeter. Be active; build a website with a link to your book in our book store. Promotion is hard work and shamelessly flogging a book is what a good author does.
As a result of this dialog I have decided to start a blog on this subject in the coming days, look for it on TheBookPatch.com.
Victor Ostrovsky
TheBookPatch team
sm85 wrote:

I can offer a couple of "must do" tips.

1) Get an ISBN assigned. It is slightly off center, however it is already precreased at the spine so it is actually centered with that. They're all great fun and there is a continuation of characters throughout which opens up whole new worlds and realms. Enjoy!

My taste continues to change through the years. I actually hadn't taken the time to sit and enjoy a book for many years until I went to see the movie Twilight. My girlfriend then told me about the books, which I hadn't heard of. I then immediately read all four books by Stephenie Meyer in a 10 day period. From there my love for reading and writing was re-ignited and I have been reading and writing every since! So, my new current favorite authors are:

Stephenie Meyer - I love the development of ones first love
Janet Evanovich - Stephanie Plum series...they are a quick read and just hilarious!
Laurell K. Hamilton - right now she is my current addiction. I have been blazing through her Anita Blake series.

I have many other authors sitting on my shelf ready to be read, but this is it for now. I really enjoy other books besides vampire series, but it has been my kick lately.

I would love to hear from others on some fun, easy reading similar to Janet Evanovich, even male writers that I can give a try.
