Book Synopsis
Take a remarkable and historical journey in the footsteps of a forgotten soldier. David Carll, was born a free man in Cold Spring Harbor, New York in 1845. At the age of 18 David Carll signed up to fight in the war, leaving behind his newlywed bride of a few days. David was assigned to the newly formed 26th United States Colored Troop Regiment from New York. He would later find himself deep behind Confederate enemy lines in South Carolina. His descendants are telling his story from records pulled from the National Archives in Washington DC, interviews, newspaper articles and family history past down from generations. From those sources, an amazing story of sacrifice, devotion, love and war emerged.

I have read many stories about the African-American experience during the Civil War. Slavery, despair and the down-right mistreatment of an entire race of people. This story is unlike any story I've read. This perspective and experience of one African-American during the Civil War goes against everything I expected. A very interesting true story of one African-American man's experience during such a turbulent time in our history. A must read!
